What To Do If You’re Stopped By the Police

We need your help in spreading the word about our program to teachers, organizers and community leaders that you know in the New York City Area.

Let's make this year even more awesome by letting people know we're here and willing to come out to do workshops at schools, with tenants' associations, community groups, art collectives, basketball courts etc.

Do you work with a community that has frequent encounters with police?

Are you a teacher whose students are the target of aggressive policing inside or outside of schools?

The Street Law Team, a group of Law students from various New York City Law Schools, want to help people feel empowered despite the imbalance in power.

We are available to come to your location to do a workshop about Know Your Rights: What to Do If You're Stopped By the Police.

The workshop gives participants an opportunity to talk about the role of police in their communities and focuses on Fourth Amendment rights in relation to searches and seizures.

We provide practical advice for getting through a police encounter safely and calmly.

We explain what constitutional rights are and why they are important and answer tough questions like, "If they are going to search you anyways, why bother saying you don't consent?"

This training is an hour and a half in length and appropriate for groups of between 5 and 50 youths and/or adults.

Each training participant will receive a What To Do If You're Stopped By the Police palm card.

For workshops in schools, we will also touch on the rights of public school students in New York City when interacting with School Safety Agents and police officers in schools.

Workshops are available in English and Spanish.
